Our particular little corner of Dorset is home to a stunning diversity of local Building Stone Colours and Types.
If one travels a mile or two out from our location you move from the very distinctive Shaftesbury Greenstone, to either the soft straw or pine tones of Chilmark and Marnhull or the more crystalline looking greys of Forest Marble, or even the stronger red tones of the stone beds in the Wincanton and Castle Cary areas.
We sell our building stone according to two fundamental criteria.
Building stone particularly the large pieces, or Quoin Stones which have been worked or cut to provide flat or square faces, we sell by the square metre...these stones tend to be used for the corners of structures, the reveals around doorways and windows, or as feature stones within an otherwise more rustic looking wall.
The other major alternative is random building stone. This is not completely random, or it would only be suitable for rockeries etc, but will always have at least one relatively flat and even face which has occurred naturally rather than being worked. We sell this by the ton, and in general 1 ton of random stone will be sufficient for 2.5 to 3 square metres of finished walling.
